Home to more than 1250 species of birds, India is a bird-watchers paradise. The country’s vast and varied eco-systems, ranging from the hot and humid evergreen forests of the north-east and south-west to the scorching deserts making up most of the western state of Rajasthan attracts a huge and diverse array of birdlife, ensuring that for the ornithological enthusiast, there’s nothing to match a trip to India. For the avid birdwatcher, touring India is a treasure trove of delights, presenting them with an endless variety of species, both local and migrant, to enjoy and observe. Even a casual observer will spot around 150 very common species, ranging from the ubiquitous House Sparrow and Indian Myna to such birds as the Red-vented Bulbul, Black Drongo and White-breasted Kingfisher. Common raptors include Black and Brahminy Kites, Honey Buzzard, Shikra and Egyptian Vultures. In the winter months, water birds also offer quite a spectacle when the migratory waders arrive, filling the local rivers and lakes.
