Jewish Heritage of India

The history of the Jews in India dates back to ancient times and Judaism was one of the first foreign religions to arrive in India in recorded history. While Indian Jews are a religious minority in India, the country’s culture of religious diversity and tolerance has ensured that over the centuries there have been no instances of anti-Semitism from the country’s majority Hindu population. While most of India’s Jewish population migrated to Israel in 1948, their legacy remains in a host of beautiful and unique synagogues that grace the remaining Jewish communities. There are two main Jewish communities in India, the Malayalam speaking Jews of Cochin and the Marathi speaking Ben Israel. Interested travelers can take a tour to gain a deeper insight into how these communities assimilated foreign elements into their own socio-religious system. Explore the Gate of Mercy Synagogue in Bombay and the Othel David Synagogue and the Succath Shalom synagogue in Poona. Enjoy a trip to Delhi to visit the Judah Hyam Hall, and travel to Calcutta, to the magnificent Magen David, the largest Synagogue in the east. In Cochin you can visit the Jewish town and the Paradesi Synagogue, one of the oldest in the world.
