Religions of India

Religion has always played a prominent role in Indian life. As the birthplace of four major religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism), India has always had a strongly spiritual culture, combined with a strong belief in religious tolerance. While roughly 80% of the country practices Hinduism, there are also significant numbers of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and Buddhists. Zoroastrianism and Judaism also have an ancient history in India, and each has several thousands of Indian adherents. Indian diaspora in the West have popularized many aspects of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy such as yoga, meditation, Ayurvedic medicine, divination, karma and meditation. India is also the home to the kama sutra, a two-thousand year old mystical treatise on sexuality that has been read and revered for generations, and the original kama sutra carvings in Khajuraho can be visited. Whatever your beliefs, a trip to India will inevitably become a spiritual journey.
